Just for Fun

from:《蒙娜丽莎的微笑》
Hi everyone! Today I wanted talk about one of my favorite words in the English language. It is “Schadenfreude”. Schadenfreude originally comes from German. “Schaden” means “harm”, and “fruede” means “joy”, so the word “Schadenfreude” means “being happy in watching someone else suffer.
How do you pronounce it? Like this: Scha-den-freu-de, or if some Chinese is a bit helpful, 啥-吨-福日哦以-德
But how do you use it in a sentence? Here's how:
“When John fell down the stairs, I felt a little schadenfreude.”
“It was schadenfreude that I was happy when Emily and Jack broke up.”
“Everyone in the room enjoyed the schadenfreude of Tim breaking his leg.”The kid laughing in the back feels schedenfreude
So, you can both “feel” schadenfreude and “enjoy” it. It is not a very common word to use in English, but it is very fun to say! The closest Chinese translation to the meaning is 幸灾乐祸. Can you try to use it in a sentence? Have a try!I felt great schedenfreude when I saw Brazil lose to Germany.
